Prison guards arrested for stealing diesel

prisonHARARE - Four Prison Officers have been arrested and detained by the internal police over the disappearance of ........

four drums of fuel from Zimbabwe Prison Service Chief Paradzai Zimondi’s Gunhill house which they were guarding last week.

According to sources at Harare central Prison where the officers report to, the accused persons were not responsible for the theft.

“We think this is mare victimization because its impossible for the officers to carry the alleged loot since the premises they guard is home to a number of people. Besides the four who are junior officers have no car to transport the drums.

“We suspect one of Zimondis drivers is responsible for the theft, that is, if it ever happened,” said the sources.

Last month a female pregnant prison officer was detained for a week for after she was accused of stealing two tones of fertilizer. Officers who witnessed the case said a senior official had stolen the fertilizer and used the female officer as a scapegoat.

According to Prison officers at ZPS HQ, Zimondi has four drivers on the government’s pay roll who do his private business, and 18 prison guards who share security duties at his Bundura and Ruwa farms, and his Borrowdale and Gunhill houses.
