Vets and youths clash over hand-outs

BULAWAYO - Divisions have rocked Zanu (PF) in Mberengwa East as war veterans and party youths clash over the distribution of farming inputs.

Zanu is dishing out fertiliser, maize seeds and hoes in the area as payment to its supporters. In Mataruse, however, violence erupted between the veterans and youths at the home of Chief Bhera Mataruse near Svita Secondary School. Mataruse is a known Zanu (PF) activist and was given the responsibility of handing out the farming inputs by the party. The veterans accuse Mataruse of favouring the youths and neglecting them. Sources said the chief preferred the youths because they had vigorously campaigned for the party in 2008.

Police had to be called to control the situation as Zanu (PF) thugs, who terrorised us during election campaigns, were at each others throats at the home of Chief Mataruse, said Tafara Zhou a villager from Mberengwa. Gertrude Hove, another villager who witnessed the incident, said: Chief Mataruse and some Zanu (PF) youths had to run for their lives as group of war veterans armed with knobkerries and machetes had descended at his home demanding their share of the farming inputs
