And one of the multitude answered and said, “Master, I have brought unto thee my son, who hath a dumb spirit. And wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him; and he foameth and gnasheth his teeth and pineth away. And I spoke to thy disciples that they should cast him out, and they could not.”
Jesus answered him and said, “O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I suffer you? Bring him unto Me.”
And they brought the boy unto Him. And when the spirit saw Him, straightway he tore the boy; and he fell on the ground and wallowed about foaming. And He asked his father, “How long is it ago since this came unto him?” And he said, “From childhood. And oftentimes it hath cast him into the fire and into the waters to destroy him; but if thou canst do anything, have compassion on us and help us.”
Jesus said unto him, “If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.”
And straightway the father of the child cried out and said with tears, “Lord, I believe; help Thou mine unbelief!”
When Jesus saw that the people came running together, He rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, “Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him and enter no more into him.” And the spirit cried, and rent the boy sorely and came out of him; and he was as one dead, insomuch that many said, “He is dead.”
But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose.
Here was a father who was desperate to have his son cured. He brought him to Jesus and as Jesus was not there, he asked His disciples to cast the demon out. They could not and when he saw Jesus, he brought his son to Him.
The father said to Jesus, but if thou canst do anything, have compassion on us and help us.
When I read the fathers prayer, I thought thats quite a good prayer, in fact a prayer I had prayed many a time. When I used to be in sales, I knew that I never had any natural talent to sell, so I used to rely entirely on God to bring in the business. At times I was desperate for sales, working for commission only is not easy, if you dont sell, you dont eat.
My prayer was, Lord without you I cannot sell, please help me to sell. Sounds like a good spiritual prayer. Here I was relying entirely on the Lord to undertake.
But what was Jesus response? “If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.” – For previous columns in this series please see the website: www.thezimbabwean.co.uk

I want to share three parts of scripture that changed my life. I pray these will help you begin to understand that the abundant life Jesus spoke about is available to every believer. The first part is in Mark 9 verse 17 to 27:
