In a statement released by Mlamuli Nkomo, its Information and Publicity Secretary, the ZAPU Youth Front accused the two bigger parties in the inclusive government – President Robert Mugabes Zanu (PF) and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirais mainstream MDC, of deliberately stalling on the new constitution, which is expected to give way to fresh elections that will usher in a new leadership in Zimbabwe.
Describing the two former political antagonists as the feuding parties in the Government of National Unity, the ZAPU youths further accused the two parties of conspiring against Zimbabweans by delaying the constitutional process.
A democratic constitution in Zimbabwe is thirty years overdue and the machinations of Zanu (PF) and the MDC-T party are prolonging the process even further, read the statement.
Hang their head in shame
The tragedy is that they (Zanu (PF) and MDC) are conspiring against Zimbabweans. By stalling the constitution making process, President Robert Mugabe and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai should hang their heads in shame for failing to fully implement the Global Political Agreement which they freely entered into.
The ZAPU youths also accused the MDC-T of having lost direction since forming the inclusive government.
Zimbabweans have been misled into believing that the GNU is a marriage between MDC-T reformers and Zanu (PF) spoilers. The reality is that the lines are blurring with each passing day. MDC-T is descending into a Mickey Mouse party with careless abandon. Judging by the emptiness of their statements it is now extremely difficult to make a distinction between Siphepha Nkomo and Didymus Mutasa.
South African President, Jacob Zuma, who is also the mediating in the Zimbabwean crisis on behalf of the regional Southern African Development Community (SADC) bloc, has reiterated that the Zimbabwean government should prepare for the holding of fresh elections next year.
A new constitution thus, has to be written before then, as the opposition, civic groups and independent observers maintain that no democratic elections can be held in Zimbabwe under the current constitution, which Mugabe has previously been accused of manipulating for his own benefit.
Ruining the country
The Zimbabwean leader has been accused of choosing his close associates into the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC), which administers the elections, the Attorney General, which is in charge of the voters role and using the government-controlled media to broadcasts Zanu (PF) propaganda, while at the same time denying opposition access to the same media.
While saying nothing about Mutambaras MDC, the ZAPU youths further accused Mugabe and Tsvangirai of ruining the country with their ongoing feud over the implementation of the outstanding clauses of the GPA.
Mugabe has overstayed in office and that is bad, Tsvangirai is restless and reckless, which makes the situation worse, read the ZAPU Youth Front statement.
Both are ruining the country, which is fatal. As principal conspirators in the GNU, Zanu (PF) and MDC-T should take the blame for delays in putting in place a democratic constitution. The revival of the peoples favourite movement, ZAPU, is making them nervous.
We believe that part of the solution to problems in the country is having a democratic constitution with a strong emphasis on individual freedoms and the devolution of power to the provinces.
The constitution should protect citizens against abuse by the state institutions and give people the freedom to reach their full potential in life. We hope that whenever the constitution making process resumes no attempt will be made to intimidate or coerce people to advocate for a certain position.
We hope the views of the people will be captured as they are and no attempt will be made to misinterpret their views and aspirations. Zimbabweans in the Diaspora should be given a chance to also air their views. The making of a democratic constitution cannot be delayed any longer!
