Civil rights activist assaulted

mdc_logoMANICA BRIDGE A member of MDC and civil rights activist was this week severely assaulted for distributing ZimRights flyers while returning from a constitutional reform workshop, near Bonda Mission North of Mutare.

War veteran Tendai Samanga, and an unnamed former Zanu (PF) councilor from Mutasa North in ward 31 allegedly assaulted Wonder Museve with clenched fists and booted feet accusing him of distributing banned and subversive material.

According to a medical report, Museve sustained multiple body injuries. Llyod Munguma, a friend of the victim, said Museve was recovering at home. Museve made a report to the police at D.C Mutasa but the victim was instead accused of provoking his assailants by distributing the ZimRights constitution reform awareness material, Munguma said.

Meanwhile, a village headman and Zanu (PF) activist, Tendai Samudzi, is threatening locals with evictions from their properties if they fail to support the Zanu (PF) Kariba Draft. Samudzi is forcing villagers to attend all night meeting in the area where people are made to adhere to requirements to ensure the Kariba Draft sails through. Victims of the forced meeting and threats chronicled how they were forced to attend the all night vigils.

The village headman is calling for night village meetings where all people above 18 years are supposed to attend and are demanded to support the Zanu (PF) document as well as inputs of the outreach consultative meetings, said one of the victims. The headman has threatened people that Zanu (PF) would unleash a wave of terror and violence code-named Operation Makarambirei Kariba Draft.

People are being told they will lose homes, farms and other properties including title deeds if they vote for a president without executive powers and against indigenisation during the referendum on the new constitution, said Wonder Museve, a local resident.
