Dube dubs himself unifying father of football

zifaHARARE Newly elected ZIFA president Cuthbert Dube has promised to use his vast experience as a business executive to turn around the fortunes of the financially troubled association.

The Harare business executive was elected the new ZIFA president after beating rival Leslie Gwindi during elections in Harare on Saturday.

Dube romped to victory, garnering 31 votes against only four for Gwindi.

The Premier Service Medical Aid Society (PSMAS) boss has been credited with rescuing the medical aid society and he believes he can do the same for cash-strapped ZIFA.

It gives me great pleasure to be elected president of ZIFA today. I would want to be the unifying father of Zimbabwean football, said Dube.

This new board will ensure that it meets the promise it made to the game stakeholders. We want to ensure that we spruce up the image of ZIFA, which has been battered in the past because of bickering. I dont know why ZIFA has been failing to secure sponsorship. This new board will try to ensure that ZIFA has corporate partners. I have confidence in the new board but we are mere individuals to drive the turn-around of ZIFA, he said.

Former ZIFA secretary-general Ndumiso Gumede makes a return to football administration after beating Kenny Ndebele by 24 votes to 11 to become one of the two vice-presidents.

Retired referee Kenny Marange was voted the second ZIFA vice-president after beating Motor Action owner Eric Rosen 20-10.

Former Highlanders coach Methembe Ndlovu, who also owns premier soccer league side Bantu Rovers, was elected board member in charge of development after winning 25 votes against Mwandibhuya Mutepfas 10.

Other members of the board include former coach Benedict Moyo and Nigel Munyati, who will be responsible for marketing, with former Black Rhinos chairman Elliot Kasu also making a return as board member responsible for finance.

Kasu and Dube also sit on the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Holding (ZBH) board.
