Family suffer over release of murderers

JOHANNESBURG The family of a Zimbabwean man who was recently murdered in Johannesburgs suburb of Diepsloot suffered great distress last week, when police released the six suspects they had arrested for the murder.

Moffat Tshabalala (25), originally from Plumtree district in Matabeleland South, was shot dead in the dirty suburb about two weeks ago, in a case that was quickly linked to a love triangle.

Police in the area arrested six suspects in connection with the murder, after they were pointed out by Tshabalalas 17-year-old girlfriend. Tshabalalas family members, who buried their relative in his home area last week, told The Zimbabwean that when they returned from the funeral proceedings, they were told that the six men had been given free bail, due to alleged lack of evidence.

This is shocking because when we left, the girlfriend, who should be a star witness in this case, pointed them out and everything checked in, said Joseph Tshabalala, the deceased mans elder brother. Those men even admitted in our presence that they had committed the murder, although they did not reveal where they had hidden the gun they used. The family believes that some police officers could have struck a deal with the suspect, which led to them doing a shoddy job to ensure that the suspects got out.

This has sometimes been the case when locals are arrested for killing a Zimbabwean and we will fight to ensure that this case does not just fall away. We want to know why Moffat was killed and who really did it. We need closure in this case and police should not stand in our way. When contacted for comment, police spokesman, Lungelo Dlamini, promised to look into the details regarding the case before talking to The Zimbabwean.
