The National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) is deeply concerned about the continued detention of the Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU) President Tafadzwa Mugwadi.
The ZINASU Leader was arrested on Saturday 27 March 2010 during the Tertiary games at the Harare Polytechnic for distributing copies of the ZINASU Weekly newsletter he is detained at the Harare Central Police Station.
Up until today he is still in police custody with no clear charges yet to be levied against him. As the NCA, we deplore the continued harassments, arrests, detentions, expulsions and suspensions of student activists in the face of the inclusive government as an affront to their responsibilities to exercise their freedoms, which include freedoms of assembly, association, movement and the right to education.
Instead of addressing the critical and burning issues confronting the students in this country, the inclusive (elusive) government is taking pride in victimizing and violating students rights. ZINASU is a critical ally of the NCA and has been playing a pivotal role in the fight for a genuine democratic people driven constitution.
We demand the immediate and unconditional release of the ZINASU President and we urge the inclusive government to address the problems that are bedeviling the students community.
The current trend of victimization of student activists is in similar fashion and reminiscent of tactics used by the racist regime of Ian Douglas Smith and the despotic Mugabe regime.
The NCA will continue to work with all progressive forces including the students union in their quest to achieve a democratic Zimbabwe, a democratic people driven constitution which embraces academic freedoms, and a government that is responsible to the plight of its citizens.
