Makonese heading for Dubai?

zvenyika__makoneseJOHANNESBURG Zimbabwe international and Orlando Pirates defensive stalwart, Zvenyika "Shortie" Makonese (pictured), could be joining the United Arab Emirates Football League (UFL) if current negotiations are anything to go by.

Makonese, who spent 20 games on bench before claiming his first place at the Buccaneers, says he is ready to go for greener pastures provided the deal is lucrative.

“I am ready for anything lucrative outside Africa. It is everyone’s wish to taste European football. More importantly, there is exposure and pride in playing in Europe.

“I am not saying I’m unhappy at Orlando Pirates, but with such an opportunity knocking at my door, definitely I would grab it with both hands,” said Makonese without disclosing the name of the club.

But close sources told CAJ News that former Orlando Pirates and Mpumalanga Black Aces midfield maestro, Edelbert Dinha, who stays in Dubai, organised the deal on behalf of his countryman.

It is true that Eddie is trying to assist me move to Dubai. I can’t mention the name of the club, but promises are full of exciting news,” said Makonese.

The move, if approved, would see Makonese earn US$20 000 per month, (about

R148 000).

Makonese said he warmed the Pirates bench for 20 consecutive matches, but soldiered on in order to show discipline, love of the sport and respect for the paymasters.

When finally the coach decided to give me the opportunity, I knew it was my time to shine. I grabbed the opportunity with both hands. As I am talking to you, I will not surrender my position unless I sustain severe injury,” said Makonese.

Makonese has more than 15 caps for Zimbabwe Warriors, and with age still on his side, he could be called to help them again in future.
