The accolade is awarded by world soccer website Goal.com. Gunners, who are making their maiden appearance in the continental safari after winning the league title last year, stunned watchers of the African game when they beat their famed rivals after 1-0 at Rufaro in Harare.
Al-Ahly are easily the most decorated club in Africa with a record six African Champions League crowns to their name. Maroto, who finished joint second top goal scorer in the league last season with an incredible 19 goals, was the hero for the Zimbabwean side after he scored midway through the first half to stun a packed Rufaro.
A defensive lapse allowed Gunners striker Norman Maroto to fire a low shot home midway through the first half to give the Zimbabweans an invaluable win against Al-Ahly ahead of the return leg in Egypt in a fortnight.
In a brief citation, Goal.com. heaped praises on Gunners and said the Zimbabwean side could easily knock out the feared Egyptians if only they are able to hold their nerve in Cairo and not concede cheap goals.
Meanwhile Anthony Laffor of Supersport in South Africa was also voted one of Africa’s players of the week. The Liberian striker led his side to a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Mozambican side Ferroviario de Maputo at the Rand Stadium.
