Chakabuda was seen here on Sunday driving himself in an old white Mazda pick-up truck. The scene drew scornful stares from local residents, one of whom immediately commented that the MDC-T mayor had failed to live up to the legacy of his predecessor, Alois Chaimiti, also of MDC-T, who was revered by residents belonging to different parties for his record of transparency, accountability and fair play.
Chakabuda was suspended by the MDC-T earlier this year after allegations surfaced that he was involved in undislosed corrupt activities. Officials here said the move to suspend Chakabuda was to pre-empt a dissolution of the city council by Local Government, Rural and Urban Development Minister and Zanu (PF) hitman, Ignatious Chombo, who has previously used corruption and mismanagement allegations to get rid of MDC-T administrations and impose so-called ‘commissions’ staffed by Zanu (PF) functionaries.
Meanwhile, the Masvingo City Council has resolved to apply for government permission to borrow $11.5 million mostly for upgrading the city’s water system. The city faces debilitating daily water cuts.
Town Clerk A.K. Gusha informed residents in a notice that $10 million was required for water ‘augmentation’ while the rest would go to buying vehicles, a refuse truck, trailers and upgrading a sewer plant.
