Mayor threatened with dismissal

chombo_ignatiusMUTARE Ignatius Chombo (pictured), the Minister of Local Government, Urban and rural development, has threatened Mutare Mayor Brian James with dismissal for refusing to re-instate Admire Mukorera as the deputy mayor of the city.

Chombo this week wrote a letter to James over his ministerial defiance. The letter dated 03 March 2010 read: I have noted with concern your unrelenting proclivity towards defiance of legitimately issued ministerial directives. Instead of complying with such directives, you seem to avidly want to cause interrogation of my instructions premised on the Urban Councils Act; and in the process you seem to be overzealous to usurp the powers conferred on me by a subsisting Act of Parliament.

You dont bring party issues to the council and the way he (Mukorera) was demoted was unprocedural because it was a party issue. I will make sure that justice prevails, said Chombo. In response Mayor James said: The issue is now in the hands of the Prime Ministers office. As of now I cannot give enough details regarding the issue. James has maintained that Itai Masaka is the deputy mayor of Mutare and not Mukorera.

During a full council meeting held in the city recently, all the councillors resolved that Mukorera would not be re-instated. Tatenda Nhemarare speaking on behalf of the councilors said: Chombos decision is quite unfortunate, and it is not in the best of public interest. Furthermore, the MDC-T argued that Mukoreras behavior, as the deputy mayor of Mutare, had brought the party into disrepute.

After his dismissal Mukorera then joined Zanu (PF) and then Chombo reinstated him in December last year as deputy mayor of Mutare.
