MDC legislator detained, harrassed by Zanu (PF) thugs

MARONDERA - MDC Member of Parliament for Marondera Urban, Ian Kay, was detained and harrassed by Zanu (PF) thugs at Summerset Farm last week.

Kay and his secretary, Diamond Tenifara, had gone to Kay Farm, along Mrewa road, to attend an International AIDS Day function. They had an invitation letter from organizers of the event. The event was held at Kay Farm. (Farm was invaded at the height of the Zanu (PF) initiated chaotic agrarian reform program).

“We arrived at the farm in time for the meeting, since we were officially invited. As we left our vehicle for the function room, we were approached by officials from the National AIDS Council. They told us we would only enter when Governor Aenius Chigwedere had arrived. Chigwedere and Zanu (PF) member of parliament for Marondera East, Tracy Mutinhiri, were already in the meeting. Zanu (PF) youths were called to deal with us. We were forced to drive to Summerset Farm for disciplining.

“At Summerset Farm, National AIDS officials and Zanu thugs, forced us into an isolated room. They told us, MDC officials had no business at the function. We were forced to disclose our countries of origin. During the interogations, we were seated on the floor. Kay was told MDC will not rule this country and must learn to behave himself. The youths told us they wanted to discipline us and MDC had no role to play at national events,” said Tenifara.

Sensing danger, Tenifara forced open the door and left with Kay, Zanu thugs in persuit. They drove off for safety in Marondera. Zanu (PF) and MDC are finding it difficult to co-exist, despite being partners in the inclusive government.

Tracy Mutinhiri, later expressed apologies to Kay, for the embarrassment and inconveniences caused to the MDC legislator.
