Municipality gets US$2.9 million grant

us_dollars_cashMARONDERA - The town council here last week received a US$2.9 million grant from government.

The grant will cater for water and sanitation services. Mtoko district also benefited from a similar facility.

“The money will be used to provide clean water for both industrial and domestic use. Though council was providing safe water to consumers, high water purification costs were a challenge for city fathers,” said a senior council official who refused to be identified.

Town Clerk Josiah Musuwo, Director Finance John Kachingwe, Mayor Farai Nyandoro and Chairperson Finance, Cephas Mazambani, attended the signing ceremony.

The town faces challenges bringing safe water to consumers. Wenimbe dam project, that was expected to ease water problems in the town, was shelved due to financial problems. The project needs about US$5 million for the contractor to finish the project. Pipes and other equipment were purchased.

The European Union (EU) and African Development Bank (ADB), promised to fund

the project. Residents also contributed towards the Wenimbe project, through monthly subscriptions levied on water bills. – Taurai Bande
