Phiri and Rosen vie for top PSL post

footballHARARE - The Premier Soccer League (PSL) goes for elections to choose a new board of governors for the league this weekend with CAPS United president Twine Phiri and Motor Action director Eric Rosen battling it out for the chairmanship post.

Four of the six officials in the new PSL board of governors have already won their positions unopposed. This means Phiri and Rosen will fight for the top post while banker Stan Kudenga will have to shrug off challenge from Dynamos treasurer Harrison Mbewe for the treasurers position in the topflight league.

The Premier Soccer League is creating a new board of governors to replace the previous executive as the topflight league seeks to turn professional in line with international standards. Members of the board of governors will be drawn from the clubs.

Incumbent chairman, Tapiwa Matangaidze, has already relinquished his post to contest the Zifa presidency. Matangaidzwe will square up against incumbent president Wellington Nyatanga, PSMAS chief executive Cuthbert Dube, ex-football player Charlie Jones and former PSL and Dynamos secretary general Leslie Gwindi. The elections for the Zifa presidency will be held on March 27.

Controversial former Zimbabwe Crackers director, Francis Zimunya, who had initially indicated he would be contesting the Zifa presidentcy has made a u-turn and is now contesting the Zifa Northern Region chairmanship post. Zimunya, who cited 30 years of football experience in his nomination papers, faces a stiff challenge from Monomotapa director Solomon Mugavazi and PSL vice chairman and former CAPS United team manager, Willard Manyengavana.

Manyengavana told The Zimbabwean he had already relinquished his post at PSL to challenge for the Zifa northern region chairmanship. “I think what we have achieved at PSL is there for all to see. I am ready to take on a new challenge. I am contesting for the Zifa Northern Region post,” he said. The winner of the regional chairmanship automatically becomes a member of the Zifa board.
