Police spokesman Andrew Phiri said in addition to public relations the training programme was also focusing on alerting officers on the types of crimes common during events such as the world cup.
Phiri said: As an organisation, we dont want to be found wanting. We are expecting a lot of tourists to come and visit tourist attractions in the country. We are therefore training our members so that they will be able to handle them.
Of course we cannot train everyone, but the training is being done in all the provinces. The major focus is public relations but we are also training them on the crimes that are common when there are tourists, and how to handle the crimes given that tourists are normally in transit.
Zimbabwe and other countries in the region hope to see an increase in tourist arrivals during the June soccer tournament as foreign soccer fans are expected to use the opportunity to also visit tourist attractions in South Africas neighbours.
