Villagers in hiding after Zanu threats

youth_militiaMZARABANI- Zanu (PF) militia have run 13 families out of their homes in Muzarabani Norths Dambakurima village, local people have reported.

The families, who were threatened with death, are now camping in the mountains too afraid to return home. One man, Clarence Chibaya, was said to have been abducted.

According to one of the victims, Jackson Dube, MDC ward secretary for social welfare, the villagers were targeted because they refused to rejoin Zanu (PF) and pledge to vote for the party

Last week Zanu (PF) militia, led by a serving soldier who has since been deployed to instil fear in the village, Phibion Hlamba, Zanu councillor George Chiweshe, Mandida Rwodzi, Bornwise Mukanakanda, Tashinga Kachere and headman Medicine Dambakurima called for a development meeting where they gave all MDC supporters two days to repent. At the meeting they mentioned names of those whom they said were MDC supporters, said Dube.

We thought they were joking until, on Saturday, they said they were going to eliminate those who had refused to comply with their order. Then, on the same night, they visited the homes of the victims while singing revolutionary songs.

When they approached my home they demanded that my wife should open the door for them to get in and deal with me. My wife opened the door for them and they searched the whole house before leaving. The same happened to the 12 other families, added Dube.

He said they didnt report the case to the police because they had previously been told the police had no power to arrest soldiers on duty.

We are appealing to the Joint Monitoring and Implementation Committee to visit and address people in our area so that political violence ceases, he added.
