Zanu (PF) targets teachers

teachingBIKITA - Teachers at Mamutse Primary and Bikita Secondary schools are being victimized as Zanu (PF) scales up its mission to win back the rural electorate.

The schools are in Ward 18, which is one of six council wards won by Zanu (PF) out of 30 wards in Bikita Rural District Council. Philimon Chigamba of Zanu (PF) won the seat unopposed after the other contestants from MDC failed to produce long birth certificates, a requirement for election.

In the Zanu (PF) council primary elections, Doctor Chishaka lost to the incumbent Chigamba. Recently, Chishaka was also voted out as the School Development Committee (SDC) chairman for Mutsinzwa Primary School.

Chishaka has put the blame of his electoral defeat and Zanu (PF)’s unpopularity in the area on teachers, who he accuses of being sympathetic to the MDC. He even went on to blame the deputy Headmaster of Bikita secondary school, Darlington Mbenguzana, for constantly reminding people of the atrocities committed by Zanu (PF) in the run up to the presidential run-off.

Mbenguzana is one of the teachers who was severely beaten and left for the dead in June 2008 by Zanu (PF) thugs under the command of Chishaka and village head, Zondai Muchakazikwa. Muchakazikwa is demanding US$10 from each member of Zanu (PF) in Ward 18 in order to buy maize for use as a political gimmick in the current election campaigns.

“Teachers at Mamutse are teaching our children MDC politics. We will do everything in our power to transfer the entire staff to schools outside Bikita. Last time we killed MDC cattle, but this time we will kill these MDC teachers!” boasted Chishaka at a ward meeting held at Mushuku ward centre.
