Families evicted from Joburg flat

evictedJOHANNESBURG Around 10 Zimbabwean families spent the weekend out in the cold in Johannesburgs Hillbrow surburb, after they were evicted from a flat they lived in by a local businessman.

Ironically, the tenants first met the businessman Wilfred Mphahlele two years ago when they hired him to represent them in court during their battle with Michael Brown, the buildings former owner, who also wanted to evict them.

Mphahlele later turned around and now claims to have bought Minefield building, a dilapidated flat in the sprawling suburb and wants the Zimbabweans out.

Earlier attempts to evict the tenants were resisted until Friday, when Mphahlele brought a group of locals, who broke windows and threw property outside.

We have tried to get assistance from the local police, but they are refusing to take our reports. We are now in the process of engaging a lawyer because we are out in the cold, said Welile Ndlovu, a spokesman for the group.
