Govt to work on service tariffs

HARARE - Instead of salary increases for the civil service the government has resolved to reduce utility costs for basics such as electricity, water and telephone. Minister of Industry and Commerce, Professor Welshman Ncube, said the government had made a decision to reduce the cost of services that constituted a high percentage of civil servants wages.

“The cabinet has agreed on various resolutions concerning the issue of reducing the cost of utilities. After a thorough consideration we agreed that all the charges by the utilities should be reduced to avoid a situation whereby the little salary our civil servants are getting is spent on paying these bills,” said Ncube. He said ministries such as Energy and Power Development, Information Communication Technology, and Water Resources and Development have been tasked to come up with strategies on how to reduce the charges as well as implement the cabinet resolution.

“The committee, which is headed by Deputy Prime Minister, Professor Arthur Mutambara, has asked the line ministries to come up with measures of implementing this resolution as a matter of urgency. “We also agreed that the committee should be able to bring this resolution to fruition by the end of the month so that the programme is immediately implemented,” he said. Prof Ncube, who is also MDC-M Secretary General, is part of the committee that has been assigned to work out a plan of reducing the exorbitant chargesthat were beyond the reach of many ratepayers.

He said the resolution came after the government failed to reach the demand of salary increments by civil servants.
