Harare mayor, councillors granted bail

mdc_logoThe MDC roundly condemns the continued abuse of our elected officials as evidenced by todays case where Harare mayor, Muchadeyi Masunda and eight councillors were given bail of US$20 each at the Harare magistrates courts on trumped-up criminal defamation charges.

The councillors are facing laughable defamation charges accused of tarnishing the image of corrupt Zanu PF officials, Phillip Chiyangwa and Ignatius Chombo who fraudulently acquired city land. Harare magistrate, Vongai Muchuchutu, said the councillors should stand trial on 6 May 2010 and remanded them out of custody on US$20 bail each.

It is clear the fabricated criminal defamation charges are political and are meant to stop the probe against corrupt Zanu PF officials. It is clear from the explosive report released by council last month that the people who should be standing before the court of law are Chiyangwa and Chombo. The council report clearly articulates how council land was stolen by these Zanu PF fat cats with the connivance of senior council officials.

The investigation shows that the stolen land was enough to build 500 000 low income houses.
