Six countries plan to introduce the visa that is meant to boost tourism in the region with the rest of the SADC member-states expected to adopt the visa at a later stage. The single visa, known as Univisa, will, in its pilot phase, cover Mozambique, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana and Swaziland.
All the six countries participating in the pilot phase are expected to have introduced the visa by June, so that tourists visiting South Africa for the football World Cup will be able to take advantage of it.
Currently a company is being selected that will design the software and all the technical aspects inherent in producing a secure and computerized visa. Univisa is aimed at tourists from Europe and the United States, giving them great flexibility in the dates for entering and leaving each of the SADC countries in the scheme.
