Acting police spokesman for Masvingo, Assistant Inspector Prosper Mugauri, confirmed the incident, which occurred in village two Nhavanga in Chiredzi early last week around 7am. He said Raphious Mareshe was guarding the fields from wild animals in the morning when he saw a heard of elephants approaching his neighbour’s field. He tried to drive the jumbos away by banging a tin, but one of them turned and charged at him.
He tried to run away but caught him and flung him into the air before trampling him underfoot. Mareshe died at the scene. A man who witnessed the tragedy later informed other villagers and a report was made to the police. Mugauri urged people to desist from provoking the animals as they were unpredictable and dangerous.
Villagers urged the Parks and Wildlife Authority to ensure that the animals did not enter into communities as they were a threat not only to their life but to food security in their communities.Post published in: News
