Mutare albinos form association

MUTARE - Albinos in Mutare have formed an association aimed at fighting off stigmatisation.

The Manicaland Albino Association (MAA) will look into issues affecting them. Association Board member, Nyaradzai Mazaiwana told The Zimbabwean last week that the formation of the association was spearheaded by Bishop Patrick Mutume of the Roman Catholic Church.

She said the albinos in the province had joined hands in mapping the way forward on issues such as how to empower themselves in order to improve their lives.

The MAA seeks to promote dignity, equality, empowerment and advancement to disadvantaged albinos.

We have decided to come together to share our experiences and assist each other. The society has gone to the extent of denigrating us but we strive to make our voices heard, Mazaiwana said.

She said albinos wanted to be treated as equal citizens, adding that given adequate resources and support, they could excel to greater heights and contribute meaningfully to society.

I wonder why the community continues to discriminate people with albinism because it is neither contagious or a disease, she said.

She appealed for support from well wishers and donors.

We want also to raise awareness to the problems being faced by Albinos, particularly on issues relating to their emotional, spiritual and physical needs.

She also said their vision is to see an emancipated albino who takes his or her place in fast changing environment with confidence, high self esteem and knowledge.
