Pest attacks grain

HARARE Farmers have been urged to watch out for a new Larger Grain Borer pest that is resistant to locally available chemicals, an Agritex official has said. Dr Godfrey Chikwenhere said that the new insect pest of stored grains is originally from South and Central America and was introduced to Africa mainly through grain imports.

“Farmers are advised to treat their maize grain soon after harvest before the damage is done. Research is underway to identify suitable chemicals for farmers to treat their maize and other stored grains,” he said.

He added that farmers needed to work closely with Agritex in their areas in order to learn what pesticides would be effective and how to use them correctly for the prevention of damages and loses.

“The new grain borer can turn maize grain into dust if not controlled, and so far chemical control is the best option. Farmers need to report quickly to any Government official if they think they have the grain borer in their granaries,” he said.
