South Africa Province Zapu youth to commemorate Independence Day

zapu_logoJOHANNESBURG-On Sunday the 18th of April, Zapu youth South Africa Province will commemorate Zimbabwes 30 years as a sovereign and independent state under the theme ZIMBABWE AT 30: Independence without Freedom.

In a statement released by the office of Secretary and publicity, Zapu youth front questioned the wisdom of celebrating independence when people have no freedom? What does independence mean when an elite white minority system gets replaced by a black elite that clings on to power at the expense of the welfare of citizens. The youth front also castigates the unity government of Zimbabwe for failing to deal with issues affecting Zimbabweans as a number of people are still in diaspora and some flocking out of the country. Zimbabwe`s independence has become a harvest of thorns. The ruling triumvirate of President Robert Mugabe, Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and deputy Prime Minister, Arthur Mutambara does not inspire confidence amongst Zimbabweans.

The fact that more than three million Zimbabweans are outside the country more than a year after the inauguration of the Government of National Unity shows that people have no confidence in the government. We are not pleased with the Coalition government as Tsvangirai has become Mugabe`s teddy bear- used and abused. He has become a modern day Abel Muzorewa who has joined forces with the enemy against the people. Zapu and its predecessor formations, in the NDP, PCC and ANC is the original and authentic liberation movement in Zimbabwe.

That it did not emerge victorious in the historic election of 1980 should not take away the credit that it was the first movement that fought for the peoples liberation. Thousand of Zimbabweans under military wing of Zipra died for a just cause fighting for an independent Zimbabwe. It will be a betrayal if we do not commemorate their contributions in the struggle for the country. For the youth and the current generation, the 18th of April is a reminder that it is not yet Uhuru. It is a day to remember that though we attained independence from the colonialists in 1980, we still have not accomplished freedom. Zimbabwe attained its independence in 1980, and it has never looked back at commemorating its independence day since then.
