Banda feels honoured to don Warriors colours

footballHARARE Former Bantu Rovers and Dynamos leftback Khumbulani Banda says he felt honoured to receive his first call up to the senior national soccer team for yesterdays African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifier against Seychelles in Victoria.

Banda, who has also played for the Zimbabwe Under-20 team told The Zimbabwean on Sunday last week that he was happy and proud to be given the opportunity to don the national team jersey at senior level.

“I am happy to get a call to the senior team,” said Banda, adding; “Its a great honour for me and I want to thank the coach for showing faith in me. I am sure I will be able to live up to expectations. It is every player’s dream to play at this level of the game.”

The 21-year-old defender has been a revelation at the Harare giants this season where he has cemented his place in the side that cruised to the money-spinning African Champions League group stage.

The talented defenders exploits have not gone unnoticed as he recently went for trials with South African Premiership champions Supersport United.

“I was there at Supersport United for a week and I will be going back for their pre-season. That is when a decision will be made on whether I have made the grade or not,” he said.

The Warriors, who are seeking a second successive appearance at the CHAN finals, were scheduled to take on Seychelles in Victoria yesterday.

Zimbabwe played in the maiden finals of the championships in Ivory Coast in February last year where they were ejected from the tournament in the early rounds after managing three draws in all their group matches.
