The company, Traffic Signals and Accessories (TSA), will install traffic lights at several intersections within the central business district at their own expense. This would be on a trial basis to allow council to monitor the efficiency of the equipment.
At the end of April council resolved “that the engineering services department monitors the performance of this equipment and for a period of time and then come up with conclusions of its suitability for traffic control.”
According to council minutes, the South Africa Company would install light emitting diode (LED) type of light which has low energy consumption levels. LED is said to last longer than the traditional lighting with a lifespan of 100 000 hours.
The deal comes at a time when most traffic lights are not operational, posing a danger to motorists. The council, which is short on money, rarely maintains traffic lights.
