BCC retrenchments

BULAWAYO - Bulawayo City Council, which is facing serious financial problems, has retrenched more than 40 health workers from its clinics in and around the city.

In letter written by town clerk, Middleton Nyoni, dated April 10 to the retrenched health workers, the city council advised that their contracts had been terminated. “Please be advised that your contract of employment by Council will be terminated at the end of business on April 30, 2010. In the meantime, your head of department and the Financial Services Director are, by copy of this letter, requested to finalise the termination accordingly,” read part of the letter from Nyoni.

Some of the health workers who spoke to The Zimbabwean said they were shocked by the decision taken by city council to off load them. “The city council should have warned us before retrenchment, now we don’t know what to do and this has come as a shock,” said one health worker. Another worker said: “What pains us is that our employment contracts have been terminated while our two months outstanding salaries have not been paid and we have not been informed as to when we will be paid the salaries.”

When contacted for comment Bulawayo Mayor Patrick Thaba Moyo confirmed the retrenchment saying his “council is facing critical financial difficulties and the only option for its survival is to retrench some workers”.
