Famine warning from FEWSNET

HARARE Zimbabweans in the south of the country should brace themselves for a long hunger spell as a famine early warning system warns that the 2009/10 harvest will last until July.

The US-funded Famine Early Warning System Network (FEWSNET) said latest assessment reports indicate that harvests in southern Zimbabwe would only be enough to last between two to four months.

These households could therefore face access problems as early as July, particularly as the drought has also reduced income earning opportunities associated with the harvesting, the early warning system said last week.

The southern half of Zimbabwe was affected by a mid-season dry spell that saw crop production in the areas being written off due to moisture stress.

Below-average precipitation and high temperatures experienced in January resulted in crop failures in areas such as Masvingo, Gwanda, Bulawayo and parts of Manicaland.

Overall production prospects in Zimbabwe are expected to be considerably better than last season.
