Farmers attach Zim House in SA

HARARE - A group of former white commercial farmers who took the Zimbabwean Government to the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Tribunal has attached one house and identified four other properties whose money they will use to settle the costs of the law suit, a Commercial Farmers' Union official has said.

In February, the SADC Tribunal said 79 former white commercial farmers who were suing the Zimbabwean government for taking their land and properties during the 2000 controversial land reform had powers to attach Zimbabwean properties in South Africa.

Initially Justice Minister Patrick Chinamasa dismissed the judgment saying Zimbabwe had not ratified to SADC Tribunal therefore it had no jurisdiction over the land issue.

In an interview on Monday Commercial Farmers’ Union President, Deon Theron, said some properties had been attached by the disgruntled former white commercial farmers.

“I am not sure what is going to happen at this stage, on whether the house is going to be sold. I think the Zimbabwean government still has time to come up with the money to cover the costs. Like in any other court case, one is given time to pay, said Theron.
