Group launches Matabeleland Day

JOHANNESBURG Zimbabwean diasporans with origins in the Matabeleland region will this Thursday converge at various venues to celebrate the inauguration of Matabeleland Day, organised by a local pressure group - Matebeleland.com.

The groups overall chairman, Freeman Ncube, on Monday told The Zimbabwean that the main objective of Matebeleland Day Celebrations was to get people from the region to chart the way forward in developing their areas of origin. We have Matebeleland at heart and will be conversing the possible way forward for the development of the region, said Ncube.

We also want to showcase that Matebeleland is not about a particular tribe but is a multicultural region that belongs to all people who value it. Various community projects for the Matabeleland region will be launched at the meetings, to be held in various centres around the world, where we have representation. Those in the United Kingdom London will converge at Durning Hall Community Centre in Forest Gate, London.Various speakers are set to take to the podium and they include Reverend Zeb Manatse, Dumi Senda, Betty Makoni of the Girl Child Network, Josh Chigwangwa, Qobo Mayisa and Luka Phiri, said Ncube.

Ncube said guests will be treated to African food delights, entertainment from both veteran and upcoming Zimbabwean artists, while various organisations will showcase their materials and artists selling their albums. In South Africa, the event will be holding it at Zoo Lake in Johannesburg, led by the South African branchs Precious Khanye, Precious Moyo, Duma Mtungwa, and Ntokozo Tshuma.

In Canada Blessings Mashiri will lead the celebrations, while Mbuso Jubane and Pedzisai Chihofa will lead the Zimbabwean celebrations in the regional capital Bulawayo. Matabeleland.com was formed in 2008, to mobilise resources to develop the region and breed self-sufficiency by reducing its dependency on the central government.
