Judge orders Zanu off farmstead

HARARE - A High Court of Zimbabwe judge, Justice Joseph Musakwa, has ordered Zanu (PF) sympathiser Wilfred Chagwedera off a farm belonging to Commercial Farmers Union President Deon Theron and his family.

The Theron family were being harassed and threatened at their Friedenthal farm near Beatrice and, last week, made an urgent court application.

According to Theron, Chagwedera held a questionable offer letter and invaded the farm with a number of his workers. They brought with them some chickens and Chagwedera instructed the men to set to work on a poultry project.

In his court judgment, Musakwa said Chagwedera should immediately vacate the farm and leave the Theron family in peace.

The respondent (Chagwedera) and all other persons acting through him are hereby interdicted from summarily entering upon or remaining on Friedenthal farm situated in Beatrice or in any way threatening or interfering with normal business and farming operations of the applicant, his relatives, invitees and family members, read the judgement.

Contrary to the court judgement, Chagwedera told ZBC on Sunday that Theron was disrupting farming activities at his farm.

In an interview on Monday, Theron said he was not opposed to land reform.

For goodness sake lets respect the laws of the land. People like Chagwedera are not only giving land reform a bad name, but continue to give a negative perception of the process to the Zimbabwean government, said Theron.

The 2,000-hectare farm was identified as state land by the government in 2007.The acquisition of the farm is still pending a decision in the courts.
