Man seeks justice for rape

HARARE - Francis Munetsi, who was beaten three times in 2008 by Zanu (PF) supporters and whose wife, Spiwe Munetsi, was raped by three Zanu (PF) activists, is determined to seek justice.

He wants to see Takawira Burundu, Collen Munyoro, Denhai Marenga, Shorai Bhero, Farai Gama and Peter Pakati imprisoned. He reported the case to the police but he says the law enforcements agents did not even open a docket. “I am failing to live with myself. The people who raped my wife are actually boasting that nothing will ever be done to them since they belong to Zanu (PF). I went to the police in May 2008 to press charges and open a docket but the police have not helped in any way, they even refused to open a docket,” he said.

Following the police indifference he went to the Headman Simon Kambanje who said that his hands were tied. He is currently in Harare trying to engage the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) to help him see justice prevail. “I am not going to find peace until the people who raped my wife are arrested, so I came to Harare to find lawyers who can document my ordeal, he said. Civil Organisations in the country say that the Inclusive Government is not doing enough to implement transitional justice. To date, no-one has been tried for the crimes of 2008 when Zanu (PF) supporters went on a killing spree in the run up to the elections.
