Chidzambwa popularly known as Mhofu, quit the Warriors last week to join the demanding league across the Limpopo.
Matola who also played for Harare giants Dynamos and Buymore before leaving for South Africa, is back from a loan spell at first division side Carara Kicks. He believes Chidzambwa has what it takes to succeed at the club.
“I have worked with Mhofu (Sunday) before at Dynamos and in the national team and I have no doubt he will bring significant changes at the club,” Matola said.
“I’m confident he will take the team to another level because he is a good coach and his track record attests to that.”
Chidzambwa who claims he is owed more than US$60 000 in back pay by the mother-body, Zifa, signed a two year deal worth R120 000.
Chidzambwa’ is the most successful coach to emerge from Zimbabwe with leading the Warriors to their maiden Africa Cup of Nations finals in 2004 and Dynamos to the final of the lucrative African Champions League being his major highlights. Chidzambwa also won three COSAFA Cup titles with the Warriors.
Chidzambwa has reportedly been offered an unlimited transfer budget by the club management which told him to get any player he wants.
“We had a long chat with him to explain that we needed a coach who will transform Stars into a well-oiled machine that will challenge for the league honours,” club general manager Rantsi Mokoena said.
However Mokoena said he wanted the club, which struggles against relegation nearly every season, to be transformed into championship contenders.
“We are sick and tired of fighting relegation and we have made it clear to Sunday we will get him any player he wants.”
Stars finished the just ended season in fourth places off the bottom of the table with five wins, 16 draws nine losses.
Zifa has appointed Norman Mapeza as interim coach of the Warriors.
