More trouble for Chiyangwa

chiyangwa_phillipHARARE - The Redcliff municipality in the Midlands province has launched an investigation into how businessman Phillip Chiyangwa (pictured) acquired vast tracts of land in the steel-making town.

Municipal authorities alleged that, Chiyangwa, through his company, Pinnacle, acquired 200 hectares of prime land at rock-bottom prices of US 17 cents per square metre against the council’s going rate of US$3 per square metre.

Acting town clerk Trust Sengwayo, who facilitated the transactions, has been relieved of his post as investigations continue.

The council has re-hired Alfred Hunda, who is spearheading an audit of land sales that took place between January 2009 and January 2010.

Redcliff mayor Joseph Matewa confirmed that an audit was underway, saying the municipality would publish any anomalies uncovered following advice from its lawyers.
