Speaking to The Zimbabwean on Sunday last week, Muchauraya, who is also a member of the sect, said there was growing acceptance in the church of the need to have children vaccinated against measles and other child-killer diseases. But he said there remained a few pockets of resistance to immunization among members of the church that is dominant in the eastern Maincaland province. “Members of the church have been very forthcoming and the turnout has beenfantastic, said Muchauraya.
“We have few pockets of resistance but as the MP for the area I am taking a leading role in convincing members of the sect to go for immunisation. Our approach is to meet those resisting medication on a personal level so as to convince them to get medication,” he said.
The government supported by Hellen Keller International, World Health Organisation (WHO) and UNICEF last week launched a nationwide measles vaccination campaign to fight a rising measles outbreak and arrest plummeting immunisation coverage. The campaign follows a rise in the incidence of measles since last September to cover almost all of the countrys 62 districts, claiming nearly 400 lives from over 7 000 recorded cases.
