Prosecute perpetrators of 2008 violence – Makoni

simba_makoniHARARE - National healing should be the number one priority for the national unity government and this should start with prosecution of perpetrators of political violence in 2008, leader of Mavambo/Kusile/Dawn Party, Simba Makoni (pictured) has said.

Makoni is a former Zanu (PF) politburo member and Finance Minister, who contested the 2008 presidential election and came, a distant third. The election was chracterised by violence and resulted in about 200 Movement Democratic Change (MDC) activists killed and thousands others displaced from their homes.

He said leaders of the coalition government should also prioritise making of a new democratic constitution and long-term economic recovery.

Makoni, who said he was planning a national meet-the-people tour dubbed ‘Conversations with Simba Makoni’, was frustrated that Zimbabweans were daily confronted by ”ravaging poverty and hunger” while Zanu (PF) and MDC leaders in the fractious coalition government were “fighting for jobs among themselves”.

“Today the nation is scattered, battered and infamous for ignoble deeds,” said Makoni. “With three million Zimbabweans scattered across the world, looking for better living, the question comes: Is this what we fought to achieve with our independence?”
