Prior to the slashing of SIM cards price, Telecel Zimbabwe had an estimated total of 900 000 subscribers. A company official reported on Monday that it has attained more than one million subscribers during a function in Harare. “The company decided to take the lead early in the year in reducing the high cost of SIM cards and cell phones to levels closer to those charged in other
countries. It accordingly slashed the cost of its SIM card to just two United States dollars, including one dollar’s worth of airtime,” said a Telecel representative.
He said Telecel Zimbabwe offered starter packs that included, along with the SIM card and airtime, a good basic handset. He said the price of those starter packs ranged from US$23 to US$38, depending on the handset. “Telecel, which less than a year ago, was considered the third largest of the three mobile networks in Zimbabwe, has become the country’s fastest growing network,” said the representative.
