UNDP applauds commercial law court

HARARE The launch of the commercial law court to resolve economic disputes will improve investor confidence in the country, a United Nations Development Programmes (UNDP) official has said.

The UNDP Country Director, Christine Umutoni, said at the official handover of the refurbished commercial law court on Friday, that the promotion and protection of human rights through the commercial law would attract investors.

The commercial court will support economic recovery efforts in Zimbabwe through fast resolution of commercial disputes, she said.

She said UNDP had a global mandate to support governance initiatives that aimed to increase access to justice.

She said it was critical and fundamental to have courts with special knowledge in commercial issues in order to achieve judicial outcomes that were just and equitable.

I am duly advised that the justice law and other sectors in Zimbabwe, particularly members of the legal profession had made several requests for a specialized court in commercial matters. No doubt members of the business community will find this court immensely beneficial. The grievance or need for a specialized court on commercial matters has now been addressed, she said.
