Chidzambwa quit his job as Warriors coach two weeks ago to take up the job at the South African club where he signed a two year deal believed to be worth R120 000 a month.
According to the club general manager Rantsi Mokoena, they had a long chat with Chidzambwa after offering him the job and told him to buy any player he wanted.
“We had a long chat with him to explain that we needed a coach who will transform Stars into a well-oiled machine that will challenge for the league honours,” Mokoena said.
He said the club management wanted Free State Stars, which has been struggling against relegation nearly every season, to be transformed into championship contenders.
“We are sick and tired of fighting relegation and we have made it clear to Sunday we will get him any player he wants.”
Stars finished the just ended season in fourth places off the bottom of the table with five wins, 16 draws nine losses. And Chidzambwa, said he was aware of the challenges of coaching in the demanding South African league where coaches are hired and fired at will.
“I am aware of the challenges of coaching in South Africa. I am familiar with the football in South Africa because I have been following it on television back home,” said Chidzambwa.
Chidzambwa is the most successful coach in Zimbabwe having taken the Warriors to their first ever African Cup of Nations in 2004. He also led Dynamos to the finals of the African champions league in 1998 where they were beaten 4-2 by Asec Mimosas of Ivory Coast.
