According to MDC-T Secretary for Information Mashonaland East Province, Silas Gweshe, war veterans led by Killen Horomba and Japheth Muzhindi, in association with Maguta soldiers, have reportedly told the villagers to speak at their own risk. “We have gone to the people asking about their feelings in regard to the drafting of the constitution and we have discovered that members of our party have been totally silenced there are afraid to even speak to us about the constitution because of massive intimidation in the area,” said Gweshe.
Gweshe said that intimidation levels plummeted following the recent visit by the country Vice President Joice Mujuru to Murewa at Chimurenga at the commemorations of the World family day. “The visit by Mai Mujuru has made the situation worse as war veterans are claiming that the power is still with Zanu (PF) and that the people in the resettlement areas of Chimurenga, Chitungazuva, Nyamazizi and Dumaira will have to tow the Zanu (PF) line or risk being evicted from their present farms,” said Gweshe.
Recently senior MDC officials have been on a massive crusade to rural areas to assure the rural populace that there will be no violence meted against them. “As a party we are reaching out to the people telling them our course and assuring them that nothing will be done to them if they participate in the drafting of the constitution,” said Gweshe. Efforts to get a comment from Zanu (PF) spokesperson, Rugare Gumbo, were
fruitless.
