ZCTU threatens underpaying companies

BULAWAYO - The country's labour body has warned companies to pay their workers or face disciplinary action.

The Western Region Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) Chairman, Reason Ngwenya, said the situation in the country was pathetic, with most companies failing to pay workers under the so-called viability problems.

“As we speak there are a lot of arbitrations, appeals and labour disputes that we as a labour movement are dealing with. Employers are not willing to pay workers under the guise that the economic situation in the country has not improved. We are warning them that they must pay workers accordingly and treat them fairly.

“If employers think that the ZCTU is a toothless bull dog, then they will believe it is not when we pounce,” said Ngwenya in an interview.

Some workers said they had not been fully paid since January saying they were sometimes given US$10 one month and US$5 the following month.
