AAG threatens to dissolve BCC

BULAWAYO - The Zanu (PF)-aligned Affirmative Action Group (AAG) has threatened the mainstream MDC-led Bulawayo City Council (BCC), saying it should be dissolved.

Speaking to journalists in Bulawayo last week, AAG Matabeleland chapter president Roy Sibanda, who is also a Zanu (PF) provincial executive member accused BCC of incompetence saying Local government Minister Ignatius Chombo should fire all councillors.

BCC is implementing wrong policies in the running of council business. Look at the roads – they are full of potholoes. The council has no money or ideas to repair them, said Sibanda. Either they put things in order or they stay at home. Otherwise we will call the Minister to dissolve this council because its not working, he said.

Deputy mayor, Amen Mpofu, dismissed AAGs threats as a joke. This is a just a joke .We were elected into office by people of Bulawayo and only people who elected us will remove us, he said. Under Zanu (PF) most cities and town councils coffers were looted by corrupt city fathers. Service delivery collapsed and led to outbreak of diseases like cholera. Roads remain with an unacceptably high number of potholes.

AAGs threats came just a week after more than 50 Zanu (PF) youths invaded a block of flats owned by a white Bulawayo businessman, claiming that they were implementing the controversial Indigenous and Empowerment Act. Led by Bhutho Gazi, the partys provincial youth chairperson, the thugs were armed with sticks and logs.
