Child president ready to get hands dirty

Speaking as Zimbabwe joined other African countries to commemorate the Day of the African Child last Wednesday, Gwanzura challenged the government and all stakeholders to uphold implement policies and decisions that will transform childrens rights into something tangible.

I have already appointed my cabinet and Im ready to get my hands dirty, said Gwanzura, who was speaking during the first session of the 2010 child Parliament. He added: I will fight for the childrens rights . together with my cabinet, we will educate and inform the people so that childrens rights are implemented effectively.

To the senior MPs, government ministers, councillors and senators teach us the spirit to continue working to build a better Zimbabwe. To the citizens, abuse should never happen when you are around us, we are counting on you to protect us. The Day of the African Child that is celebrated on June 16 in commemoration of the Soweto uprising, when on 16 June, 1976, thousands of high school students from the Johannesburg township of Soweto staged mass protests against attempts by the apartheid government to give them inferior education.

The police responded to the protests with teargas and live bullets killing hundreds of innocent children. The day, which in South Africa is celebrated as Youth Day, is dedicated to the honour of the brave Soweto students and is also an occasion to focus on the fight for the cause of African children.
