CIO agent in court on fraud charges

BULAWAYO - A member of the dreaded government spy agency, the Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO), has appeared in court charged with defrauding two city residents.

Takurirepi Magodo appeared before magistrate Abednico Dube on Friday facing two counts of fraud. He was denied bail and his trial begins on June 15.

One of the allegations against Magodo is that, in May, he introduced himself to Gertrude Dube as a member of the CIO. He said he could help her get birth certificates for her three children quickly.

Dube gave him US$400 to travel to the registrar generals head offices in Harare to sort out the documents, but he never returned to Dube.

Last week, Dube spotted him in the city centre and reported the matter to police, who arrested him.

In the second case, Magodo is alleged to have cheated Sibusisiwe Moyo, a businesswoman, out of US$600 on the pretext that he would facilitate a gold-buying licence.

According to the state outline, Magodo approached Moyo in April at the Mining Industry Pension Fund offices in Bulawayo, where he told her that he could easily help her get the licence. Magodo was given US$600 by Moyo and then disappeared.
