Displaced people suffer as violence flares up

murambatsvina_vicfallsHARARE -- Thousands of people displaced by political violence in 2008 remain homeless because they are unable to return to their old communities where their lives remain under threat, while relief agencies have failed to provide them with alternative accommodation, a United Nations (UN) agency has said.

In its latest report, the UN Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs said the situation, which had appeared to stabilise following the formation of the inclusive government last year, was likely to worsen because political violence that has resurfaced since the constitutional reforms began is causing more displacements.

“While reports of new displacements have been limited, efforts to seek durable solutions for certain groups have met with challenges owing to a perceived politicized context and resource constraints such as lack of permanent housing,” OCHA report said.

The report noted with concern that aid agencies were again issuing warnings about a resurgence of violence and displacements due to continuing farm invasions and the activities of Zanu (PF) militants attempting to derail the drafting of a new constitution.

“During the month of May, different human rights organisations continued to issue statements of concern on the increasing incidents of threats, attacks and harassment of human rights defenders, civil society organizations and media personnel,” it said.

It said the UN and partner organisations have prepared a draft protection strategy to guide their response to displacement expected to increase as constitutional reforms gather pace in months ahead.
