FIFA Congress roars into life this evening

fifa_congressJOHANNESBURG The 60th FIFA Congress will be officially opened in Johannesburg this evening, with a number of topics in its agenda.


The congress will be officially opened at 5pm in the Gallagher Convention Centre, in a ceremony that will last about two hours.

The official opening follows two separate meetings held by the world football governing bodys Finance and Executive Committees, which took place on Sunday and Monday, respectively.

Among other topics, the FIFA Congress, to be chaired by the organisations President, Sepp Blatter, financial issues will still top the of the two-day meet, which ends at 8pm tomorrow, a day before the 2010 World Cup kick-off.

One of the important issues to be discussed at the meeting will be the FIFA Financial Report, said Blatter.

Due to a strong financial result, FIFA will announce an extraordinary financial contribution to its members as well as to the confederations.

The congress will also give an update on strategic, sports-political matters and on the decisions that were passed at the 2009 Congress, while there will also be a vote on proposals for amendments to the FIFA Statutes, Regulations Governing the Application of the Statutes and Standing Orders of the Congress.

Blatter said he is hopeful of fruitful deliberations and a successful congress.

FIFAs supreme decision making body, the FIFA Congress is an assembly made up of representatives from each affiliated member association.
