Interpol yet to verify terror suspects nationalities

HARARE -- Two men accused of trying to enter South Africa to commit terrorism activities will spend more time behind bars as Interpol is yet to verify their nationalities, police have said.

The two men, who were arrested on June 20 at Beitbridge border post after they were found using fake Kenyan passports have been named as 33-year-old Imran Muhammad and 39-year-old Chaudry Parvez Ahmed.

Muhammad is suspected to have been involved in the 2008 Mumbai bombing which result in the death of 160 people.

Police spokesman Wayne Bvudzijena on Tuesday said the case which was expected to heard by a Harare magistrate on Monday will be held once Zimbabwean police receive information from Pakistan.

“Investigations are still on going,” said Bvudzijena, adding; “Once investigations are completed, they will be brought to court. We are waiting for Interpol.”

Sources say Muhammad was normally based in the Chilean capital Santiago while Ahmed flew from Saudi Arabia to Tanzania, before connecting to Zimbabwe by road.

Zimbabwe and South Africa have tightened border patrols since the start of the World Cup which started on June 11 and ends on July 11.
