Lets just hold elections now

The majority of the people of Zimbabwe are now fully aware that the government of national unity (GNU) is not working as well as was expected. There is a general stalemate in terms of the implementation of some of the major provisions of the global political agreement (GPA), and the number of the so-called outstanding issues is growing by the day.

The writing of the new constitution is still to commence in earnest, while the tug-of-war between the main protagonists is in full swing.

Meanwhile the nation is aching for real change and development in all its facets. Poverty, disease and decadence stalk the majority of our people driving them into destitution and despondency. Needless to point out that those who were fortunate enough to plug into the gravy train callously continue to suck the life-blood of the nation like parasites. The stripping of national assets by the corrupt state officials and their private sector schemers is the order of the day.

The predatory state is running at full throttle. The MDC elements, who thought that they would, by joining the looters, stem the tide of debauchery, are now finding themselves impotent. They are essentially compromised and weak regardless of whatever they profess as their founding values and principles. It is therefore no exaggeration to say, under the circumstances, the people are on their own.

What do the people want in the light of this unhealthy stalemate? Surely the people are not keen to go back to the frightful situation of 2008, when all manner of evil visited this country. Rather, the people want to move forward into the future. They want elections right now, even if this will mean that some of them will be raped, murdered, maimed and have their properties destroyed by the usual destroyers that call themselves liberators of this country.

The people are clearly of the view that elections now will result in the emergence of a government that will be based on the winning political party, and not the current futile arrangement we call the GNU. The patch-work has failed to work in Zimbabwe. Two of the three political parties in the GNU have indicated that they are ready for elections, while the third party is petrified of elections for obvious reasons. The Mutambara MDC formation is aware that elections anytime will spell doom for that little and fragile grouping. The longer the GNU limps along the better for them.

The MDC-T has always been ready for elections because it is the peoples political party. That partys popularity has grown in leaps and bounds since the formation of the GNU. For example, virtually all the positive aspects of the workings of the GNU are viewed by the general public as attributable only to the MDC-T. Indeed, Morgan Tsvangirai projects rather impressively as the statesman per excellence compared to the tired and worn out Robert, reputed as the devil incarnate and the curse of this country.

It is obvious that if elections are held today Zanu (PF) will lose miserably, unless it resorts to violence and intimidation as it has always done during elections. At the time of writing, there is ample evidence that the former liberators will have no choice but to unleash the most horrific violence on the nation in order to stay in power.

There are numerous reports of military bases being revived in some parts of the country. Indeed, there are numerous reports of sporadic violence in some areas, largely linked to the forthcoming constitutional outreach meetings. Nevertheless, Zimbabweans are ready able and willing to pay the ultimate price for the freedom of this country. God bless our Zimbabwe.
